Do you wake up with a headache? Do your jaw muscles hurt in the morning? Talk to your dentist, because you may have a teeth grinding problem known as bruxism.

What is Bruxism?

Bruxism is a habit of grinding your teeth, clenching them over and over, eventually wearing teeth in the process. The pressure from grinding can cause teeth to break and crack, increasing chances of gum problems. During your oral exam, our dentist will check for signs of bruxism.

The causes of bruxism may include anxiety and stress. Reseach has shown, for example, that children as young as pre-school age can develop this habit; studies of pre-schoolers found a correlation between grinding their teeth and signs of stress such as social withdrawal and anxiety.

Nail biting can also lead to bruxism.

As well some medications or recreational drugs may cause users to grind and clench their jaws and teeth. Alcohol, tobacco or caffeinated drinks can also increase the risk of bruxism.

Custom Nightguard

Our dentist can talk to you about using an oral appliance, also known as a night guard. A night guard is a hard-plastic tray that fits over either your top or bottom teeth to protect them and will help to reduce teeth grinding or teeth clenching.

Visit our dental clinic if you have any questions regarding Bruxism or if you are interested in the custom Nightguard.
