Fluoride and Decay Prevention

Many years ago scientists started to notice that children who were born and raised in areas with natural fluoride in drinking water had fewer cavities than children in other areas. In 1945, Brantford Ontario became the first Canadian city to add fluoride to a public drinking supply. When public drinking supplies are fluoridated, further fluoride treatments are typically not needed. However, in certain cases patients will benefit from additional fluoride treatments, which are painless, and take only a few minutes.

Brantford was paired with neighbouring Sarnia in an 11-year case study of the effects of water fluoridation. Over this period, Brantford children had a 63% reduction in the severity of caries and a 35% reduction in the prevalence of caries.4 Since the time of these early case studies, the rate of community water fluoridation in Canada has grown, with 45.1% of the total population now having access to fluoridated water.

Fluoride absorbed by your body when teeth were forming (during mother’s pregnancy to early childhood) integrates into the structure of enamel and makes it stronger.
